Where is the force of reason?
07. Dez 1999
We are living through a very grave moment for our consciences as human beings and as Christians, since once more, like many other times in history, the force of reason seems to be overtaken by the reason of force. All the efforts and initiatives which many have made to stop this course of action seem to have vanished into nothing in favour of pragmatic choices which represent a defeat for humanity. We experience dramatically a sense of powerlessness in the face of events which bring suffering, destruction and death now and in the future. We must not lose hope by trusting not in our own strength but in the all embracing love of God the Father who nourishes thoughts of peace and takes to heart the cry of his children. We would like to:Express our most sincere and sympathetic participation in the pain of all who suffer because of this war.
Invite all who believe in the power of prayer to ask persistently for the gift of peace , a gift that men do not know, cannot give or do not want to give.
Ask of all those who have it in their power and hold in their hands the destiny of this war, under whichever role, not to allow themselves to be blinded by the temptation to prevail by force but to search after reason and engage again in dialogue and understanding of the other's motivations and reasons.
We ask, with insistence, that this whole issue be entrusted into the hands of the UN which can still be the proper and legitimate agency capable of stopping this spiral of violence and mediating solutions that are respectful of history, of right and the achievement of the great good of peace.
